The climate here and what it does to your system

Saratoga's climate is shaped by three things: elevation, tree cover and the canyons coming down out of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Summer afternoons reach the 90s, and the higher, more exposed west side of town takes direct sun late into the evening. Winter nights drop into the 40s and sometimes lower in the canyons, because cold air runs downhill after dark and pools wherever it cannot keep going.

Tree cover changes the picture again. Lots with mature oaks and redwoods stay shaded through the morning, so the house is still cool at ten and then gains heat quickly once the sun clears the canopy. Homes on the flatter, more open north end near Prospect Road get sun earlier and shed it faster overnight. Same town, materially different heating and cooling loads.

The other seasonal factor now is smoke. Late summer and autumn can bring stretches where the sensible thing is to keep the windows shut and run the system with good filtration. That comes with a real tradeoff, and it is worth being honest about it. A higher-MERV filter catches more, but it also restricts airflow, and an older blower may not have the headroom for it. The right filter is the best one your system can actually move air through. We will tell you which that is rather than pointing at the highest number on the shelf.
