The climate here and what it does to your system

Gilroy runs hotter and longer than the towns north of it, and that single fact drives most of the heating and cooling decisions here. The town sits near the southern end of the Santa Clara Valley at roughly 200 feet, far enough inland that the coastal influence arrives late in the evening and weak when it does. July and August afternoons in the high 90s are ordinary. Triple digits are part of a normal summer rather than an event.

The cooling season is long as well as hot. Warm afternoons begin in April and can still turn up in October, which means a Gilroy air conditioner logs far more run hours per year than the same unit installed in Los Gatos. Equipment ages by run hours, not by the date on the label. A system here is often genuinely worn at an age where the same model elsewhere is only middle-aged.

Winter goes the other way. The valley floor collects tule fog, mornings drop into the 30s, and frost settles across the open ground around town. Fog that never lifts keeps a furnace running most of the day on what looks like a mild date on the calendar.

Then there is the air itself. Gilroy is surrounded by working farmland. Discing, harvest and dry summer wind put real dust into the air, along with grass and weed pollen. Filters load faster here than homeowners expect, and a loaded filter starves the system at exactly the moment it is working hardest.
